Coruscant was an ecumenopolis planet, collectively known as Galactic City, located in the Core Worlds. Though debated by historians, it was generally believed that Coruscant was the original homeworld of humanity. Coruscant was known as Imperial Center during the rule of the Galactic Empire.
Coruscant strategic location at the end of several major trade routes enabled it to grow in power and influence, causing the city-planet to surpass its early rivals and become the hub of galactic culture, education, finance, fine arts, politics and technology. It was the location of several major landmarks, including the Jedi Temple, Monument Plaza and the Senate Building.
History[]
Coruscant served as the galactic capital and central system in the Old Republic for thousands of years. 6000 years before the Clone Wars, the Sith Order established a shrine on the planet, in a location strong with the Dark Side of the Force. After ridding the site of Sith influence, the Jedi Order established one of their temples on top of the now-abandoned site. This temple later became the largest known temple and the seat of their order. Despite Jedi attempts at capping the Dark Side influence, power seeped up through the layers and into the temple, clouding their vision. This was later exploited by Sith Lords to move unseen by the Jedi and influence politicians throughout the planet.
At some point, the Old Republic fell in a conflict and the Jedi temple was raided by Mandalorian warriors. After the collapse of the Old Republic and the defeat of the Sith, the Galactic Republic established its capital on Coruscant. The planet continued in this role for 1000 years, playing host to the Galactic Senate, which had its headquarters in the Galactic Senate Building.
During the Clone Wars, Coruscant expanded its defenses and became the site of various military command centers. An attack on the planet was considered implausible due to its secure location. Prior to a terrorist attack on the infrastructure and later the Battle of Coruscant at the end of the war, Coruscant was only directly attacked 1000 years before.
When the Galactic Republic was transformed into the Galactic Empire, Coruscant became known as "Imperial Center" and "Imperial City". Darth Sidious, in his guise as Galactic Emperor Palpatine, partially demolished the Jedi temple and turned it into a massive new structure that served as his Imperial Palace. Sidious even opened up and renovated the old Sith shrine underneath the temple, with the intention of using it to increase his influence throughout the galaxy. The Galactic Senate became the Imperial Senate and lasted for 19 years, until Palpatine disbanded it shortly before the Battle of Yavin.
It was only after the Battle of Endor and the establishment of the New Republic, that Coruscant lost its prominence. First the Riot in Monument Plaza spread to a full-blown insurrection against the remaining Imperial authorities, thus weaking Imperial hold on the world. Later, the New Republic re-established the Galactic Senate and began periodically moving it from planet to planet by way of popular vote, rather than letting it stay on Coruscant.
