Geonosis was a terrestial planet in the Outer Rim Territories.
History[]
The planet was a ringed desert world located only 4 parsecs from Tatooine. Geonosis was the homeworld of the insect-like Geonosian species. The Geonosians lived in hive-cities on the planet's surface and were known to be highly industrious. Their factories provided the Trade Federation and later the Confederacy of Independent Systems with droid armies and war machines. They were also the original designers of the Death Star battle station.
Geonosis became the setting of the first battle of the Clone Wars and later was invaded by the Galactic Republic again to stop the Geonosians from reactivating their factories for use in the Confederate war effort.
After the end of the Clone Wars, the Geonosis system became the construction site of the first Death Star. The Galactic Empire sterilized the surface of Geonosis during the project, killing off almost all life on the planet. The Lothal Rebels later traveled to Geonosis to discover the details of the Empire's construction, but were too late, finding only a debris field with derelict Imperial construction modules and a planet devoid of life signs.
In secret, one of the Geonosian queens had survived deep underground. Being sterile, she could not give birth to organic Geonosians, instead creating a device to act as an artificial birthing chamber for advanced battle droids. Her creations would be a way to continue the species and get revenge for her people's genocide. Darth Vader discovered this queen through investigation done by the rogue archeologist Aphra and went to Geonosis to steal the droid birthing chamber. He fought the queen and took off with her device, using it to produce a private army of battle droids for his own secret personal mission.
