Grand Admiral was a rank borne by twelve high-ranking Imperial Officers of the Imperial Navy. These individuals were promoted by the Emperor himself, and were answearable to him, the Commander-in-Chief or Supreme Commander and the Grand Moffs. Grand Admirals were the naval equivalent of Grand Generals and similarly had enough authority to issue the status of the most wanted bounty in the Galactic Empire, as well command over a large Star Destroyer fleet. The rank was still active in the First Order, an offshoot of the Imperial holdouts.
By far the most prominent figure to hold the rank was Grand Admiral Thrawn, an unparalleled and ruthless strategist known well for his commanding of the7th Fleet in the relentless hounding of the Spectres and his wary attitude toward the threat posed by the Grysk Hegemony. Another noteworthy officer to fill the position was Grand Admiral Rae Sloane, an important member of the Shadow Council and the public face of the Imperial remnants. She retained this rank after she helped found the First Order.
