The Hammerhead was a starship design that existed long before the age of the Galactic Empire.
History[]
This particular line of starships was popular enough to last throughout several centuries. It inspired the design of the Hammerhead corvette and even lent its name to this successor design.
Behind the scenes[]
The design of the Hammerhead corvette featured in Star Wars Rebels is partially based on various Old Republic designs featured in the Legends videogames Knights of the Old Republic and The Old Republic. The Trivia gallery of the episode A Princess on Lothal mentions the connection to Knights of the Old Republic, as did Pablo Hidalgo when asked about the similarities in Rebels Recon 2.12. He clarified that the Story Group considers the Hammerhead corvette to be a modern design, in-universe, but created to simulate a much older design. Out of universe, the Knights of the Old Republic design served as a direct inspiration.
The in-universe profile of the Hammerhead corvette furthers this notion by making an oblique reference to the now-Legends Hammerhead-class cruiser by stating the older design had lasted a long time. In Legends, different models of the Hammerhead-class was used for several millennia.
