The Imperial Navy, also known as the Imperial Starfleet or Imperial fleet was the space-based branch of the Imperial Military.

History

Forming from the Republic

After Order 66 and the fall of the Jedi, and rise of the Sith and Empire, the Republic Navy formed into the Imperial Navy, taking on new ship designs, such as the Imperial I Class Star Destroyer, or the TIE/ln Starfighter. The Imperial Navy was formed from the Republic Navy of the Clone Wars. It used ships and equipment from the Old Republic, but eventually new designs formed the majority of the navy and spearheaded the Empire's expansion into the Outer Rim Territories and the Unknown Regions.

Since Imperial starfighters were used by both Navy and Army, rivalries erupted between pilots in the two branches. The two groups even invented derogatory nicknames for their counterparts.
