Jakku was a barely settled desert planet located in the Western Reaches.

History

Jakku was home to anchorites that wanted to meditate far from civilization. At one point, 1000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire, Jakku was considered significant to the galaxy at large. The planet later disappeared from popular memory, its secrets known only by a select few. One such individual, the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, sent expeditions to Jakku to conduct archeological digs.

During one such journey, his private corvette, Imperialis, was boarded by a curious anchorite, Gallius Rax. Sidious discovered the stowaway and convinced the boy to work for him, acting as a guardian for the archeological site and making sure no one came across the secrets there.

During the Galactic Empire, Jakku had an Imperial military presence, acting as a jump-off point for expeditions into the Unknown Regions. In the aftermath of the Galactic Civil War, Jakku became a rallying point for retreating imperial forces, and they fought a last stand battle above the planet.

A huge fleet of New Republic warships engaged Imperial vessels in the upper atmosphere, and the crippled Imperial ships used their tractor beams to drag Republic vessels into the sands below. The end result was a vast graveyard of warships, waiting to be plundered. Realizing the battle was lost, Imperial forces blew up their base, burying the planet's secrets and ensuring the Republic didn't find out details about Sidious's project.

Years after the Battle of Jakku, a young Rey was left on the world by her family, being raised by Ungar Plutt and working as a scavenger. 29 years after the end of the Galactic Civil War, the Empire's successor state, the First Order, searched Jakku for information about Luke Skywalker's whereabouts. They assaulted the Sacred Village of Tuanul, massacring its inhabitants and capturing the Resistance pilot Poe Dameron. Rey, now a long-time scavenger, found Poe's astromech unit, BB-8, and managed to flee the planet with the Stormtrooper defector Finn.
