"I want proof, not leads!"
―Kendal Ozzel

Kendal Ozzel was a male human who served in the naval forces of the Galactic Republic and the Galactic Empire in turn. Sacrificing everything for the New Order, including the chance at a simpler life with his fiancée, he eventually became a Joint Chief and the Admiral of Death Squadron, the personal armada of the Commander-in-Chief Darth Vader. His blundering ineptitude coupled with his major gaffe at the onset of the Battle of Hoth resulted in his demise at the hands of the Dark Lord's deadly grip.

Biography[]

Early service[]

A male Human born into a wealthy family on Carida, Kendal Ozzel attended multiple prestigious institutes and graduated as Captain of the Line. In spite of this, he was deemed unfit to serve as a capable field commander and was instead relegated to a teaching position at the Carida Academy.

Nonetheless, he served for a time in the Republic Navy, and remained supportive of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's policies even after the latter's ascension to Emperor. While seeking to enlist in the armed forces of the Galactic Republic's successor state, the Galactic Empire, Ozzel became engaged to be married to a woman. One night, his fiancée asked to join her on the side of the rebellion against the regime. Having made up his mind already and being crystal clear that his allegiance lied with the Empire, Ozzel and his would be wife cried and held each other for the night before parting ways forever the next morning, thus giving up on the chance to a happier life.

Admiral of Death Squadron[]

As he had desired, he enlisted in the Imperial Navy, coming to hold the rank of Rear Admiral and being a member of the cabinet of Joint Chiefs, an advisory cadre of senior officers on martial-related matters. Admiral Ozzel was soon after assigned to the Executor-class Star Dreadnought Executor, which was intended to be the flagship of Grand General Cassio Tagge. However, the latter's misplaced trust in the rogue Doctor Cylo, which complicated the War on Shu-Torun and resulted in the attempted hijacking of the Executor, persuaded Emperor Palpatine to relieve Grand General Tagge of his duties and appoint the Lord Darth Vader as Commander-in-Chief in his stead. The Admiral bore witness as the demoted General tried to justify his error of judgement and was summarily Force-choked to death by the unimpressed Dark Lord. Darth Vader then asked Ozzel when the Executor would be ready and gave him two weeks after Ozzel replied he needed a month. Not willing to suffer the fate of the late General, the Admiral complied with the Dark Lord's demand.

As the Galactic Civil War unfurled, Admiral Ozzel became the top military-ranking officer of Death Squadron, the personal armada of Lord Vader, which was charged with tracking down and dismantling the fledgling Alliance Fleet, as well as the discovery of the hidden Rebel base. As second in command in to the Dark Lord, he felt he was the perfect choice for adjutant to his exigent superior. During this time, Admiral Ozzel commended Lieutenant Commander Ciena Ree for her outstanding service the past two years, in addition to implying she might obtain a promotion to proper Commander soon enough.

Sometime later, Admiral Ozzel and General Maximilian Veers were summoned by Lord Vader to his abode on the volcanic world of Mustafar. As the Emperor's Fist, the naval officer relayed the latest developments: resources for Imperial projects were delayed and the Rebels had scattered and concealed themselves throughout the galaxy, adding difficulty to the hunt for them. The Admiral then suggested that a world-by-world bombardment would be required and that Death Squadron should be the force to carry out the task, insisting it was ludicrous not to throw the flotilla in the fray, The Dark Lord was none too pleased at his subordinate's choice of words. After apologizing, Admiral Ozzel questioned as to what was their plan on eliminating the Rebels, comparing them to vermin, only to be cut off by General Veers, who instead concluded the insurgents were "weeds": just like weeds surviving the storm, the Alliance would keep surviving heavy attacks as it was flexible. Slightly bitter at being cut off by his peer, Admiral Ozzel addressed Lord Vader, who had shown interest in General Veers' argument.

As part of Project Swarm, the Empire launched thousands of Viper Probe Droids across the galaxy to seek out the Rebellion's hidden base. Skeptical of the operation, Admiral Ozzel dismissed Captain Firmus Piett's report on the findings of one such probe, not recognizing it as definitive proof but a mere lead. Nevertheless, Lord Vader, who had overheard his underlings and sensed their presence there through the Force, overrule him and commanded that he set Death Squadron on a course for the ice world of Hoth. Resentful at Captain Piett's success, Admiral Ozzel glared at him before preparing to maneuver the flotilla.

Admiral Ozzel took some liberties with Lord Vader' s command: believing he could surprise and overwhelm the Rebels, he had the Star Destroyers emerge from hyperspace right above Hoth. Rather than have the expected results, his strategy backfire as the insurgents, now alert on the Empire's presence, turned on the shield generator capable of withstanding any orbital bombardment. Disappointed with the move and having had his fill of his subordinate's mistakes, Lord Vader opened a channel to the bridge and began Force-choking the oblivious Admiral Ozzel for his final failure, before the latter could give his report. As he felt his life slip away, the pompous and inept officer thought back on all his existence, comprehending only now he had sworn himself to intolerant tyrants, regretting his choices and wishing he had stayed with his fiancée. His last moments were spent on a childhood memory one of him running up a mountain, heading home for dinner. Just as Admiral Ozzel's body hit the floor, Lord Vader granted his rank to the eager Captain Piett.
