Malachor was a planet in the galaxy and the location of a Sith Temple.

History[]

Thousands of years prior to the days of the Galactic Republic, a female Sith Lord created a superweapon inside the resident temple, hidden underneath a domed surface. Her work was interrupted by a task force sent from the Jedi Order, resulting in the Great Scourge of Malachor. At least one Crossguard lightsaber was used by an unknown individual during the event. It was the first noted instance of this weapon being used.

The actual Scourge was a result of a weapons-malfunction, as the superweapon was activated in an unfinished state during the battle. All combatants outside the temple were instantly petrified, dying where they fought. The event was used as a cautionary tale told to successive generations of Jedi Knights and the world was considered off-limits to the order.

The Sith Temple remained standing and within its chambers, it contained a Sith holocron, a vast source of knowledge in the Dark Side. This holocron was guarded by many traps which required teamwork to pass through, a quality many Sith lacked. Therefore, the holocron remained undisturbed for millennia.

As time passed, the word "Malachor" later became part of several colorful phrases used during the Clone Wars and later, similar in usage to the word "Hell". For instance, during a tense situation while on a mission, Republic Colonel Meebur Gascon started a complaint by saying "There's no way in Malachor...". During the era of the Galactic Empire, the pirate Cikatro Vizago once yelled the phrase "What in Malachor are you doing?" when he discovered Ria Clarr handing out his credits to poor people on Lothal.

During a visit to the Lothal Jedi temple, Ezra Bridger contacted Jedi Master Yoda, wanting to know how to stop Darth Vader and his Inquisitors. Yoda cautioned him on his eagerness to fight, suggesting it would make the boy susceptible to the Dark Side. Getting impatient with Yoda's cryptic replies, Ezra's declared he wanted to fight for his friends, regardless. Upon hearing this, Yoda sighed and suggested he find Malachor, thus ending the vision.

Later, when Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus and Ahsoka Tano ventured to the planet, Ezra encountered the former Sith Apprentice Darth Maul. Maul joined Ezra after the boy was cut off from his companions, and they journeyed into the Sith Temple in search of the Sith holocron. After working together to bypass the temple traps, the duo managed to grab the device. Being pursued by Imperial Inquisitors, Maul made Ezra go to the top of the temple with the holocron to activate it and gain knowledge, while he and the rebels held off the Inquisitors below.

As Ezra placed the holocron inside the control mechanism for the temple's weapon, he was greeted by the voice of the then-ancient Sith Lord, who informed him he now had the ability to destroy life. Ezra immediately realized his mistake, but couldn't remove the holocron from the larger device without help. Meanwhile, Maul had turned on his temporary allies, after all three Inquisitors had been killed. He wounded Kanan, but the latter pushed him off the temple and made his way up to the top.

As the holocron was an invaluable artifact to the Sith, Darth Vader took a personal interest in the events on Malachor and made his way to the planet. He dueled the Jedi present and tried to manipulate his former apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, when the latter joined the fight. The two dueled, while Ezra and Kanan managed to remove the Sith holocron as the weapon powered up. Ahsoka sacrificed herself to let the others flee, when she stayed behind with Vader inside the closing temple.

The superweapon fired, but soon fizzled out, and the Lothal Rebels made their getaway. Some time after, an injured Vader emerged from the underground facility. Ahsoka was seen venturing into the temple, their duel concluded. Ezra kept the recovered Sith holocron and begun opening it by himself.

A mercenary unit named after the planet was known to operate during the Galactic Civil War.
