A scout ship was an Imperial starship.

These vessels were used to scout out targets for the Imperial Navy. Right before the Battle of Yavin, several scout ships were sent to Dantooine by Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin to check the veracity of Leia Organa's claim that the secret Rebel base was located there.
The ships reported back to Tarkin that there were remains of a base, but also that it had been abandoned for a while. They later conducted an extensive search throughout the surrounding star systems.
