The Sphyrna-class Corvette or Hammerhead Corvette was a type of starship used by Alderaan, Phoenix Squadron, and later the Alliance to Restore the Republic.
History[]
The Hammerhead corvette was a modern ship design based upon an ancient design that went back centuries. It got its name, "Hammerhead", from this older line of starships. Despite its small size, the Hammerhead corvette carried heavy firepower and boasted powerful engines, as well as robust armor. Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan led an expedition of three corvettes to Lothal as part of a secret operation to aid the local rebel cell, Phoenix Squadron. The ships were meant to resupply their fleet by being "accidentally" stolen during a relief effort. On their way, the fleet was stopped by an Arquitens-class light cruiser commanded by Yogar Lyste. After checking their identification, he allowed the ships to land with a TIE fighter escort. Upon landing on Lothal, the ships were met by Kanan Jarrus and Ezra Bridger disguised as a Stormtrooper and a Stormtrooper cadet, respectively. Shortly after, Lyste arrived with a crew of Stormtroopers to secure the three ships, having learned about a series of ship hijackings involving Alderaan's previous relief efforts. In order to remove the gravity locks that clamped down on each corvette's leg, Leia Organa and the Lothal rebels had to improvise an alternate plan. The end result became a skirmish with local security forces and a successful "theft" of all three ships. In deep space, the three Hammerhead corvettes, piloted by the Lothal rebels, rendezvoused with Phoenix Squadron and became part of the the rebel cell's fleet. During the Battle of Atollon, one was destroyed leaving two in the fleet. Years later, the Rebel Alliance used two corvettes as part of their fleet during the Battle of Scarif, one of which was used by the rebels to crash an pair of Star Destroyers into the shield protecting the planet from the rebels.
