The Trade Federation, known simply as the Federation, was a Neimoidian trade and shipping conglomerate that came to control much of the commerce in the galaxy. In the last waning years of the Galactic Republic, the Federation was headed by a Viceroy and even had it's own representative in the Galactic Senate to lobby for even greater power.

During the Clone Wars, the Trade Federation became one of the main founders and creditors for the Confederacy of Independent Systems, although it's delegates in the Senate claimed that these were only "extremists" whose views did not reflect those of the Federation as a whole.

At the end of the conflict, the Separatist leaders were slaughtered and the business conglomerate's was soon after nationalized by the Galactic Empire.

Organisation[]

Corporate[]

NeimoidiansSWE

The Trade Federation was controlled by the Neimoidians.

The Trade Federation was a Neimoidian wealthy corporate organization presided over a Viceroy; as of 32 BBY, Nute Gunray held this position, and directed the Invasion of Naboo. The Federation also maintained a seat in the Galactic Senate of the Republic.[1]

The Federation was headquartered on the weathly Neimoidian colony world, Cato Neimoidia where it jewelled palaces and opulent bridge-cities were the pride and joy of Trade Federation barons, who sought constantly to one-up each other and dazzle guests with displays of ostentatious hospitality and luxury living.[1]

Military[]

During the Republic Era[2] the Federation maintained a powerful miltary.[3] In addition to a fleet of starships, a major branch of the Federation military was its army of battle droids,[4] which let the Federation easily target planets that did not have a military force,[5] and was used to back the economic might of the Federation, and gave them the ability to influence local politics.[3]

History[]

Federation-Republic power struggle[]

In the last decades of the Republic Era, the Trade Federation had become engaged in a power struggle with the Galactic Republic. During a conference on Eriadu in a bid to resolve the issues between the Republic and Federation. However the radical political group known as the Nebula Front killed the Federation leadership was killed, allowing Nute Gunray to become the Viceroy of the Trade Federation. Gunray possessed strong anti-Republic leanings and placed his similarly minded allies into powerful positions in the Federation.[3]

Naboo Crisis[]

Prior to the Naboo Crisis, the Trade Federation came to be allied with the mysterious Darth Sidious, who provided secret help to the Neimoidian leadership. Such was the case that when a Lucrehulk-class Droid Control Ship's crew was captured by pirates over the Kellux system, the Dark Lord sent his apprentice, Darth Maul, to hunt the criminals down.

Following the taxation of the Free Trade Zones, the Trade Federation retaliated by blockading the peaceful planet of Naboo, and later occupied it at the behest of their shadowy benefactor. Unfortunately for them, Queen Padmé Amidala was able to liberate her homeworld from the droid forces and capture Viceroy Nute Gunray and Settlement Officer Rune Haako who were heading the invasion.

Clone Wars[]

During the Clone Wars, the Trade Federation signed as a member of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, bringing battle droids and warships to the Separatists' arsenal, and the necessary funding to manufacture various automata. Despite this, Senator Lott Dod assured the Senate that the Federation had nothing to do with the secessionist movement, though both he and his organization were involved with the CIS. On one occassion, captain Sib Canay and an envoy blockaded Pantora and kidnapped the daughters of the Chairman to force him into joining the Separatist Alliance. The plot was unvovered by Senator Riyo Chuchi and Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano, forcing the Neimoidians to end the blockade and release the daughters to avoid a scandal with the Republic.

Imperialization[]

At the end of the war, Gunray and Rune Haako were killed together along with the other Separatist leaders by Darth Vader on Mustafar, allowing former employee Arsin Crassus to plunder the Trade Federation's accounts and assets, which resulted in the commerce guild's nationalization by the Galactic Empire.
